KARACHI: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has on Tuesday clarified that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) his not registered under Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui’s name and that a change of leader in the ECP documents could not be registered unless intraparty elections are held and a new leader emerges.
The clarification from ECP spokesperson has come at a time when factions within MQM-P deepened last night as Rabita Committee, party’s supreme body, claimed to have removed Dr Farooq Sattar from convener’s position after a row over Senate elections ticket.
MQM-P’s Bahadurabad faction had last night convened Rabita Committee and ousted Farooq Sattar. Its leader Farogh Naseem went on to claim that their party had been allotted with ‘Kite’ as electoral symbol by ECP.
However, ECP clarified that the change of leadership could not be registered with the body unless an intraparty election was held.
Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui had emerges as the new leader of the Bahadurabad faction after the controversial ouster of Dr Farooq Sattar from the party. Sattar alleged that the members of the Rabita Committee wanted to oust him in order to pave way for former president Pervez Musharraf for leading the party.
